Thingamajig® is the YMCA of Metropolitan Washington's signature annual S.T.E.A.M. (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics) Invention Convention, designed to inspire children to imagine, create, problem-solve, and innovate through hands-on learning experiences. The event encourages youth ages 5–14 to think outside the box, develop critical thinking skills, and showcase their creativity in a fun, inclusive environment. As a volunteer, you will help us achieve the following goals: Inspire the next generation of innovators, creators, and problem-solvers. Create a safe, welcoming, and inclusive experience for every child and family. Support hands-on S.T.E.A.M. learning through interactive activities, demonstrations, and invention challenges. Encourage creativity, teamwork, confidence, and perseverance in young participants. Ensure the event runs smoothly by assisting with guest services, activity stations, judging support, registration, event logistics, and setup/cleanup. Help create memorable experiences that reflect the YMCA's core values of Caring, Honesty, Respect, and Responsibility. Volunteer Impact: Every smile you share, question you answer, and child you encourage helps create an unforgettable experience that empowers young people to dream big, solve real-world problems, and discover a lifelong passion for learning. Together, we're connecting today's young makers with tomorrow's innovators.

The safety and well-being of every child, volunteer, staff member, and guest is our highest priority at the YMCA of Metropolitan Washington. Thingamajig® is a large-scale family event that welcomes hundreds of young inventors, families, community partners, and volunteers for a day of hands-on S.T.E.A.M. exploration. As a Thingamajig volunteer, you agree to the following safety expectations: Always wear your volunteer badge and event t-shirt while on duty. Report to Volunteer Check-In before beginning your assignment and remain in your assigned area unless directed by a YMCA staff member. Children must remain with their parent, guardian, camp counselor, or designated YMCA staff. Volunteers should never be alone with a child or escort a child without staff approval. Immediately report any safety concerns, injuries, lost children, suspicious behavior, or emergencies to the nearest YMCA staff member or event supervisor. Maintain clear walkways and activity spaces to help prevent slips, trips, and falls. Use caution when assisting with activity stations or demonstrations involving tools or materials, and follow all instructions provided by YMCA staff. Help create a welcoming, inclusive, and respectful environment for every participant, regardless of age, ability, background, or experience. Volunteers may not administer first aid beyond their level of training. Notify YMCA staff immediately if medical assistance is needed. For the privacy and protection of all participants, do not take photos or videos of children using personal devices or post event content featuring children on social media unless specifically authorized by the YMCA. Volunteers should maintain professional boundaries at all times. Do not exchange personal contact information with children, connect with them on social media, or communicate with them outside of YMCA-approved channels. Follow all instructions from YMCA staff, emergency personnel, and venue staff throughout the event. Remember: If you see something, hear something, or feel something isn't right—say something. Prompt reporting helps us ensure a safe, fun, and successful experience for every child and family attending Thingamajig. Thank you for helping us inspire creativity while keeping safety at the center of everything we do.
